How Does Cannabis Work on the Body?
Understanding that starting your wellness journey can feel overwhelming, Verdes has crafted a Cannabis 101 guide packed with helpful information to support you every step of the way. In this cannabis guide for beginners, we’ll start with the ECS or endocannabinoid system. The ECS is a complex body network in charge of maintaining homeostasis. In simpler terms, it makes sure everything from internal temperature and mood to blood sugar levels are where they should be. The ECS uses a system of endocannabinoid receptors, called CB1 and CB2, located on the surface of cells. The body naturally produces endocannabinoids to activate these receptors. THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), one of over 100 cannabinoids found in the cannabis sativa plant, also binds to these receptors.

What is THC and CBD?
For thousands of years, THC has been used as a natural remedy to treat a range of medical conditions, such as arthritis, glaucoma, epilepsy, sleep issues, and Alzheimer’s disease. It is an analgesic compound. It blocks pain signals from being sent to the brain. It’s also a neuroprotectant, helping to stimulate brain growth by creating new nerve cells.
Equally as well-known and beneficial as THC is CBD (cannabidiol). This other main cannabinoid is incredibly powerful when it comes to health benefits but doesn’t cause the “high” sensation. CBD has been used in pain management, to reduce anxiety, as an anti-inflammatory, antipsychotic, anti-oxidant, anti-fungal, and more.
Terpenes are a group of over 200 organic compounds and give each strain a unique aroma and effects. They are found in many plants but are most commonly associated with cannabis due to the high concentration of them. Rather than rely on strictly THC percentage, find what terpenes you enjoy and look for the strains that contain those terpenes.
